Have you ever heard

The sound of raindrops

Through concrete walls?

Sometimes they sound like insects

Marching. A large banquet.

A satisfied queen.

Other times, they sound like

Nails bitten.

Teeth shattering.

Knees knocking and breaking a thin glass.

I listen to the downpour

This night. I can barely recognize

My own place.

Someone’s stuck in my walls.

Probably trapped, buried in

Accidentally. Cemented forever.

When the raindrops decide to knock

I listen to fingernails chop itself

Biting, not chewing, noisily.

The windows open, but curtains drawn

Too dark to tell the shadows apart.

But voices, they always differ.

I listen closely, and I’m sure

It’s not all in my head

When one whispers saying,

We both know I’m dead.
